Classic Irish Soda Bread – A St. Patrick’s Day Must-Have

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the easiest homemade bread you'll ever make! Irish Soda Bread is a simple, rustic loaf with a golden crust and a soft, slightly dense crumb. It requires no yeast, no kneading, and no rising time—just mix, shape, and bake! Whether you're serving it with butter, jam, or a hearty stew, this traditional bread is a must-have for your holiday table.

Even if you've never baked bread before, this recipe is beginner-friendly and foolproof. Let's get started!

Ingredients (Makes 1 large loaf)

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups (400ml) buttermilk (or see substitute below)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional, for a richer loaf)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

🔹 Optional Add-ins:

  • ½ cup raisins or currants (for a sweeter version)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (for extra flavor)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prep

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast iron skillet (traditional baking method).

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together:
    • Flour
    • Baking soda
    • Salt
    • Sugar (if using)
  2. If adding raisins or caraway seeds, stir them in now.

Step 3: Add the Buttermilk & Form Dough

  1. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  2. Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter (if using).
  3. Gently mix with a wooden spoon or your hands just until combined. (Tip: The dough should be slightly sticky but not overly wet. Avoid overmixing—it will make the bread tough!)

Step 4: Shape the Dough

  1. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it.
  2. Gently knead 3-5 times—just enough to bring it together into a round shape.
  3. Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet or skillet.

Step 5: Score the Dough

  1. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep ‘X’ across the top.
  2. This helps the bread bake evenly and is a traditional Irish baking technique!

Step 6: Bake the Bread

  1. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C).
  2. Reduce the heat to 400°F (200°C) and bake for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  3. The bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 7: Cool & Serve

  1. Transfer the bread to a wire rack and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
  2. Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or alongside a bowl of soup or stew!

Substitutes & Tips

No Buttermilk? Make your own by mixing 1 ¾ cups milk + 1 ½ tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
Crispier Crust? Let the bread cool uncovered.
Softer Crust? Wrap the warm loaf in a clean towel to keep it tender.
Storage: Keep at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
